Cuando viajamos a Bacalar, Quintana Roo, con Marisol Centeno, fundadora de Bi Yuu, estábamos en busca de inspiración… y la encontramos. Este recorrido lleno de colores, sensaciones, texturas y tintes no podría haber sido más cómodo que a bordo de un Audi Q2.
Gatopardo: Cuéntanos sobre Bi Yuu.
Marisol Centeno: Es una marca especializada en tapetes artesanales que fundé en 2012, con la intención de tener un espacio donde el diseño y la tradición textil encontraran una plataforma de innovación, intercambio, aprendizaje y desarrollo social a largo plazo. Estamos trabajando con 32 artesanos en Teotitlán del Valle, Oaxaca, y en proceso de integrar a otra comunidad de Chiapas.

La materia prima que usamos es de la más alta calidad, tanto las fibras como los tintes. Usamos principalmente una fibra de oveja llamada Lincoln, tejida a mano en México, y nuestros tintes principales son la grana cochinilla, el añil, el pericón, el nogal, el muicle y la granada.
G: ¿Cuándo te diste cuenta de que los textiles son tu pasión?
MC: Siempre he estado rodeada por ellos, desde mi abuela Emma, que era maravillosa bordando, cosiendo y tejiendo, mi tía Efigenia, y mi tío Javier, un hombre de San Juan Chamula, Chiapas; fue por ellos que conocí a artesanas talentosas. Y mi papá, que siempre me contaba del sonido que hacían los telares mientras él caminaba por el Barrio de Xochimilco, en Oaxaca, donde creció.
Los tapetes llegaron a mí durante un viaje a Turquía, donde visité talleres de hilado y tejido. Fue ahí donde me enamoré de ellos, de los procesos y de las piezas de arte que terminan siendo.
G: ¿Qué te inspira para crear diseños nuevos?
MC: Los arquitectos modernistas mexicanos y su manipulación del volumen, los recorridos en el tren Chepe, en la Sierra de Chihuahua. la alquimia y la geometría y su interpretación del espíritu y la materia, el océano, el art déco, mi abuela Emma, el pintor Rufino Tamayo, los huipiles, hasta la ilusión y los sueños.

G: ¿En qué te fijas cuándo estás buscando materiales nuevos?
MC: En el caso de los tintes, es emocionante descubrir la tradición que hay detrás de su uso y de su proceso. Respecto a las fibras, siempre busco las que envejezcan con belleza, que sean resistentes y a la vez cálidas durante su uso.

G: ¿Cuáles son los retos de trabajar con artesanos?
MC: Algunas dificultades se vuelven fortalezas con el tiempo. Mis mayores retos son el tiempo que toma aprender a colaborar desde un sistema horizontal, las diferencias culturales y los roles de género en las comunidades. El racismo en la historia de México ha generado mucha desconfianza; romper esas barreras es difícil. Dados los tiempos y costumbres tan diferentes que existen entre una comunidad y la Ciudad de México, lograr construir un sistema productivo que respete ambos mundos conlleva muchos esfuerzos.
G: ¿Cuáles son los siguientes pasos para Bi Yuu?
MC: Estamos en proceso de integración de un nuevo grupo en Chiapas. Nos hemos planteado nuevas metas relacionadas con la innovación para contar con nuevas herramientas.
